The nation has been gripped by the War of the duchesses today… Megan v Kate, Harry v William, modernity v antiquity and so on.. it has to do with something that Harry said (I don’t even wish to find out) and now the nation has to rip itself to parts in speculating, taking sides, crying, shouting, laughing….. in a massive frenzy about this most symbolic English institution…
The obsessions, discussions, phone-ins, tabloid tornados, and other tawdry flashings of ‘stories’ linked to the Royal family, it now feels like it’s taken a different direction because serious questions of their legitimacy is being openly questioned… Needless to say, the Daily Mail brigade of flag wavers and porcelain collectors, this poses an existential threat to English state and identity… screaming and howling that England is being murdered by pretty much everyone who doesn’t have a porcelain figurine of the Queen in their cabinet….
It is so sad to see these quasi patriots paint a skewed picture of England as if it didn’t have anything else to be proud of except a cartoon view of itself and its institutions.. Nothing could be farther from the.truth..
